Our route
Our tour route is very flexible, with the exception of meeting up with family and friends in December and February. Our main restriction is, as Australians, we can only be in Schengen countries for 90 days in a 180 day period.
Here is what we’ve done to date and the plan for the rest of the year.
October 2019
Romania, Bulgaria and Serbia
Train Bucharest to Giugiu. Then Eurovelo 8 along the Danube River to Calafat, crossed the river into Bulgaria, and rode Vidin to Bregovo. At Bregovo we crossed into Serbia and from Negotin followed the Eurovelo 8 again along the Danube to Belgrade.
November 2019
Sebia and Croatia
Belgrade to Novi Sad and then Vukovar and Osijek in Croatia. Osijek to Zagreb by train then train to Split on the coast. We picked up the Eurovelo 6, island hopping northward to Rijeka.
December 2019
Croatia, Slovenia, Italy, Switzerland, France and Portugal
Sightseeing drives around Istria - Rijeka to Pula and Umag. Back on the bikes at Umag to Poreč, Motovun, through Slovenia to Trieste in Italy. Train to Zurich to meet family and then Strasburg in France. Drove to Montaudn in western France for a family Christmas and then to southern France. Train to Lisbon for New Year’s Eve.
January 2020
Portugal, Spain and France.
Train to Lisbon, then cycled along the coast to Seville. Car to Barcelona for a few days sightseeing. Train across the border to Perpignan, France then ride to Montpellier. Train to Lyon and Geneva.
February 2020
France, Italy.
A week with family skiing in France. Train to Milan. We then rode south to Pavia where we joined the Via Francigena cycling east and south.
March 2020
Italy.
Continued along the Via Francigena to Siena. From here we caught a train to Anmcona ready to hop on a ferry to Croatia, Bosnia and Herzegovina, Montenegro when it all went crazy. Italy suddenly in lockdown so we grabbed a train to Rome and a plane to London with the intention of cycling around the UK for a few months. Two days later we flew home to Australia six months early (insert sad face Emoji) …
To be continued … when we don’t know
Back to Italy then Austria, Germany, Sweden, Denmark …
